We have planted a set of sturon onions. The soil is very poor quality so to give them a chance to grow into a large onion we have put each bulb into a cut up kitchen roll with good quality compost. This should mean the tube not only adds more nutrients but also retains some water when it get a bit drier and also recycles the usually thrown away tubes.
